WHO WE ARE
Turn HORSEPOWER INTO
SENIOR POWER
Since 2005, the award winning Seniors Around Town has been providing FREE door to door transportation for Orinda Seniors. All funded through donations and the proceeds from this car show fundraiser. Your donations keep our seniors on the move, empowering them to remain independent. SAT is a program run by The Orinda Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
Seniors need to get to a doctor’s appointment, get groceries, attend a social event, take care of their personal errands to remain in their homes. When seniors are no longer able to drive, they often lose the ability to live independently.
With just a little support, seniors can remain independent longer. Seniors Around Town provides safe, easy to use community-based door to door transportation at no charge. This helps keep the connection between the senior and the world outside of their home. And the community benefits as well. Lasting friendships develop between riders, drivers, and staff. During the short drives the riders and drivers share stories, mutual connections, history, and experiences. As we like to say, “It’s more than a ride”.

It is more than a ride
Neighbor helping neighbor!
Since all volunteers must reside in Orinda, there’s a sense of immediate connection and trust when someone from your community offers help. They’re not considered a stranger because they shop at the same stores, go to the same parks, and their children went to the same schools.
Local volunteers are more comfortable finding their way, already familiar with the neighborhoods and surrounding towns. Volunteers live within minutes of the rider’s home or destination, which reduces drive time and fuel.
Riders and Drivers
What Seniors Around Town participants are saying
SAT is almost unbelievable to not only we who ride but others who learn of this service for Orinda seniors. Volunteer drivers arrive at our residence on time, help us into their fine autos, caring for our safety, our canes or walkers, and other belongings and deliver us to our designation. There they accompany us or stand by, per our preference and return us safely back to our home. All of this-their help, time and expense- is kindly and freely given!

RiderDuring the pandemic, they quickly adapted to the needs of the moment and did occasional grocery shopping for me. Following the wildfires, SAT re-invented itself once again and found a local contact for me who would check on me in case of an emergency. They also delivered vital necessities to put into our Go Bags: lantern, portable radio, and quick snacks. SAT has been and continue to be an essential versatile organization which steps up to meet the needs of the elderly population in Orinda.

RiderThis wonderful program has given me freedom to leave my house, and the confidence that I can be safe, ask for help and go to places I cannot go myself. This makes me happy.

RiderThank you!!! This has been a wonderful program. I have been driving for 9.5 years and loving it.
Rosie
DriverThank you once again for all your incredible efforts in our behalf to make the 4th of July parade such a success- and treat for us. Providing the covered seating area, offering us water and cookies, and making us feel so “special” on that important occasion, makes for a wonderful day for us!! I can’t imagine the 4th of July without your involvement! Thank you, thank you, thank you. You enrich our lives!

RiderYour transportation service has been a great help to my thrice weekly dialysis treatments and other doctor’s appointments- the volunteers are most cheerful, joyful and helpful, and they drive with a smile.

RiderWe have lived I Orinda since 1951. This year for health reasons, my husband can no longer drive his car. Since I never drove an automobile, this is a devastating turn of events for us. Thanks to the SAT program, Carol (driver) and all the other wonderful volunteer drivers who so generously give of themselves and their time, to take us shopping, doctor’s appointments etc. we don’t feel quite so helpless and lost.

RidersWe are pleased to be part of a community program that supports the needs and desires of seniors (like us) who enjoy staying independent. Each time we meet a new rider we appreciate the importance of this effort and ESPECIALLY are grateful to the hard working staff behind the scenes.

DriversI feel so valued when I hear how much this service has changed their lives: the feeling of independence and being able to arrange their own transportation. I love knowing that my simple act of driving someone has such a great impact on the quality of their life.
